I’ve been following the hilarious Twitter – I mean X – feed of Becky Holmes for ages, laughing out loud as she shares her Twitter/X chats with the low life men who send her pictures of their genitals – Greg, that’s you, by the way.
Ms Holmes gets messages from”Prince William”, “Paul McCartney” “Elon Musk, “Gerard Butler” and of course, “Keanu Reeves”and she generously shares her online chats with these scammers I mean real-life celebrities who end up either sending her dick pics or asking her for money.
Ms Holmes is truly hilarious and her book “Keanu Reeves is not in love with you” does not disappoint. It is very funny, as I expected, but it is also eye-opening and, at times, shocking and even sad.
So many elements are in the book: the sheer daftness of the scammers’ pitches, which are offset by the extraordinary naiveté of the people who fall for their unbelievable plot lines.
But as we meet women who have been victims of these scams – and they are largely women – we see that it is not just naiveté.
Oftentimes it is a mix of initial trust, which – as doubts begin to creep in as the demands for money increase – is now coupled with a fear of being revealed to have been duped. We meet people who throw good money after bad, hoping against hope that their instincts are correct.
Ms Holmes is kind and compassionate, and never, ever judges the people she interviews.
I found myself laughing out loud many times – as I do when I read her tweets – but this book also has sobering forensic detail into how scamming works, and sad stories laced with huge dollops of kindness and empathy.
You end up wiser.
